The credibility of the West’s morality on the wane

By Mr Roshdi Bouibri translated by Mr.Mohamed lhalal

A quote ascribed to Loy Tolstoy, the famous Russian author, says: “Those who purport to be the most civilized, the most sophisticated, the most advanced and the most elegant are in reality the most heinous, and most barbaric, the most destructive and bloodiest in history”. This wisdom might be regarded as the summary of this man’s long experience. When we apply this quote to the modern western civilization today, we find a large match between its meaning and the reality humanity has been enduring due to the barbarism and brutality of the western “gentlemen”. Those men of elegant suits and refined collars have inflicted all sorts of humiliation and woes on peoples both during the period of colonization since the nineteenth century and during the events of the twentieth century. Devastating wars were waged driven by the desire of ensuring dominion over the world by preserving the supremacy of their rogue states and the interests of their voracious corporates. This is exactly what Michel Onfray, the French philosopher confirms by saying: “We are in a capitalist system that consistently produces wars. The widespread saying that “capitalism inherently carries wars just like night carries storms” becomes a true statement confirmed by reality. And this exactly what makes us live within a collapsed and corrupt political, economic, cultural and ethical system. If a researcher wishes to investigate in the record of Western war crimes, he needs to write numerous big volumes.

Despite the scientific and technological feats achieved by this civilization in many fields, it has failed to overcome this quandary; the ethical dimension remains a rooted and unrepairable crack that is consistently worsening. This might have pushed some intellectuals to admit the failure of capitalism and its liberal philosophy and its inability to design an ethical system that can preserve the human value of the human being and his distinction from animals. “Every critical analysis levelled against the socio-liberal philosophy would spot the marginal ethical value attributed to its outlook of the ways relationships of individuals should be and the kind of values that should govern their ties within society. Hence, any ascription of ethical values to liberalism is doubtful in the first place. [1]”

For at least two centuries, it was widely believed that the western civilization evolved with the human at its core center, and the ultimate objective of statements and laws was to enhance the very existence of this being and protect his rights, but the true reality was always the touchstone of credibility of these claims. In addition to value-based contradictions and the double standards which were stark clear through the logic of monopolizing values while other peoples are devoid of these values, the continuous crises have proved the weak commitment to these values, even inside western societies; the crisis of corona virus pandemic is liable to give us pause for contemplation and rethinking. Onfray, the philosopher, mentioned that in his book “Decadence” [2] and who sees the western civilization in constant decadence, and has reached the age of frailty.. and the corona virus pandemic represents a new phase in “the collapse of the western, Christian, Jewish civilization”.

The western states have failed in the test of credibility of their civilization’s ethical system. And the reality has, each time, proved its fall, hypocrisy and contradiction, and has showed in many situations its alignment with governments against the values the civilization professes, particularly when it comes to the rights of other peoples.

Philippe Beneton, the philosopher, in his book “The moral deficiency of the West [3]”, raised this issue and noticed what the west once constantly boasted about will definitely become a source of danger that might lead to its doom as things begin to unveil with the increasing signs of moral decline. For this reason, the philosopher calls for an audacious and more realistic policy that figures out a balance in implementing what are regarded the main pillars of western civilization.

The Palestinian cause remains a revealing standard of the moral credibility decline of western governments and many of their civil and political organizations. The woes Palestinian people have been subject to for more than seventy years, such as killings, displacement, abuse and persecution, which they are still enduring, remain a witness to the hypocrisy and blatant contradiction between the rhetoric and true belief and practice on the ground. The western states not only contradict the values of peace, tolerance, freedom and dignity, which they have long professed, but also become a partner of Zionists in violating and erasing these values, what is more, they back the transgressors with all means and capabilities. The Zionist monster, which the west had created and supplied with all means of brutality, has accelerated the pace of the western moral decline and warn the world of the looming dangers and implications; hence, the search for a new civilizational and moral system to save humanity and preserve what is left of its sound nature, has become a vital and urgent need, as the western civilization has failed to be an inclusively noble and just world civilization.
